Sherlock Holmes Season Finale Recap

John goes to his therapist for the first time in 18 months. Sherlock's dead. Three months earlier, Sherlock's solving cases. The press is noticing. Lestrade presents him with the hat. The cameras love it. Watson points out that he's close to being famous and the press will turn.

At the Tower of London, Moriarty walks up to the Crown Jewels. Business is as usual at the Bank of England and Pentonville Prison—until Moriarty breaks into all three simultaneously. He writes "Get Sherlock" on the glass before breaking it. They find him sitting on the throne, wearing the jewels. John brings a text to Sherlock's attention: "Come and play. Tower Hill. Jim Moriarty x."

Moriarty is put on trial, and Sherlock is an expert witness. John tells him to keep it simple. Sherlock says he'll be himself—exactly what he shouldn't do. Kitty approaches him as a big fan, but he knows she's a journalist. He refuses to give her an interview, but she says he's going to need someone on his side. He analyzes her and says "You repel me."

On the stand, Sherlock ends up posing the questions himself since the attorney's are leading. The judge does not appreciate him showing off. Unsurprisingly, he's held in contempt. The only reason Moriarty's still in prison is that he chose to be there. The defense rests without calling any witnesses. The jury finds Moriarty not guilty.

Sherlock awaits Moriarty's arrival. He's not surprised he got to the jury. Moriarty asks if he figured out the final problem. Sherlock watches him tap his fingers. Sherlock knows he didn't take anything because he's "the man with the key." He didn't need to take anything. Moriarty doesn't want money or power. He wants to solve the final problem, which will start soon (the fall).

Two months later, John is brought to see Mycroft. Brook has given Kitty an exposé on Sherlock. Who's Brook? Mycroft tells John assassins who have moved in nearby and warns him that Moriarty's obsessed. John finds an envelope on the doorstep, and upstairs, Lestrade's there because the Ambassador's children vanished. A camera watches as they leave for the school. There are no signs of a break-in. Sherlock finds an envelope with Grimm's Fairy Tales inside and a message for help on the wall and follows a trail in oil until it stops.

Sherlock brings the case to Molly and with the footprint samples from the scene, he's expecting something to lead them to Moriarty. She can tell that he looks sad when he thinks no one can see and offers her help. John recognizes the seal on the envelope from the one on their doorstep with breadcrumbs: Hansel and Gretel. Sherlock realizes which factory they're in. They find chocolate wrappers with mercury and then the kids. Lestrade advises Sherlock to not be himself when talking to the girl, but she screams upon seeing him.

Sherlock takes a separate cab, and Moriarty appears on the television screen with the story of knights disbelieving another's stories. This is just as the police begin to question if Sherlock was involved after he found the children off a footprint and the girl screamed. When Sherlock gets out, Moriarty drives off. An assassin saves him from getting hit by a car, only to be killed after. They want something with him. Sherlock finds the camera on the bookcase as Lestrade shows up. He knows why he's there and what Moriarty's game is. He's not playing and sends him away. Moriarty's trying to make him seem a fraud, but John says he knows he's real.

Lestrade gives John the heads up on his way back. Mrs. Hudson brings them another envelope. Inside is a burnt gingerbread cookie. The police arrest Sherlock. John joins him at the car after punching the Chief Superintendent. Sherlock grabs a gun and takes John "hostage." He's become a fugitive. Sherlock gets an assassin's attention by jumping in front of a bus. It works, and he finds out Moriarty left the code in his apartment.

They go to ask Kitty about Brook. That's when Moriarty walks in. Kitty says there's no Moriarty and Brook is an actor Sherlock hired to be him. "Brook" runs, "scared" of Sherlock. When they leave, Sherlock says there's only one thing he needs to complete his game. He goes to see Molly and tells her he's always trusted her. He thinks he's going to die and needs her.

John confronts Mycroft about spilling the information he has about Sherlock. Mycroft got Moriarty to open up about the code by telling him about Sherlock. Sherlock realizes the code is the taps Moriarty did and arranges a meeting on the hospital roof. John gets a call that Mrs. Hudson was shot and leaves.

Sherlock meets Moriarty, who says it was easy to beat him. Sherlock knows the assassins tried to save him because he knew the code. He says he could kill Brook and bring back Moriarty with the code, but Moriarty says it's meaningless. It was all a trick to get Sherlock.

Mrs. Hudson is fine, and John realizes what's going on. Moriarty has some incentive for Sherlock: His friends will die if he doesn't jump. Sherlock steps up on the ledge. As Moriarty walks away, Sherlock begins laughing. He knows there's a recall. However, Moriarty kills himself, leaving Sherlock with no way to figure out the code—and no choice but to get back on the ledge.

He calls John as he gets out of the cab. He tells him everything they said about him was true and he's a fake. John refuses to believe it. Sherlock tells him to keep his eyes fixed on him. He says goodbye. John watches him fall.

John visits Sherlock's grave and asks him to just "Don't be dead." Sherlock watches him walk away.
